Watch This — ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Featurette Goes Into Opening Scene
by Erik Amaya
In a new video supporting July’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, star Tom Holland calls the action scenes “some of the best” in the series. Take a look at the video as Holland and director Destin Daniel Cretton discuss what went into creating the film’s opening set piece.
Not going to lie: Holland saying a lot of the action was shot “in camera” is extremely heartening. Getting the fights and stunts to be as real as possible is key to making these movies work. Sure, it’s easy enough to have a CGI Spidey swinging from New York skyscrappers, but fighting the Hand and other antagonistic forces needs Holland and his stunt team to really be there. Of course, Holland was reportedly injured during one of these stunts, but since he recovered quickly, it is a badge of honor that puts him in the class with Harrison Ford and Michelle Yeoh — actors who give there all emotionally and physically.
It also seems like Cretton, veteran of Marvel productions like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Wonder Man, was not ready for the crowds gathered to watch a Spider-Man movie being filmed. Both the character and Holland are huge draws and since the director is sticking around in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he might see those crowds become a more common occurrence. Or, like so many other Marvel projects, he’ll disappear into the veil of secrecy.
Set four years after Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker (Holland) is finally all grown up and dedicating himself to being the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. But his past returns when circumstances bring him close to MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) again. Meanwhile, Peter’s powers seem to be evolving and recent string of crimes is leading toward the most powerful opponent he’s faced yet. Oh, and then there’s Sadie Sink‘s mysterious character. Some believe she is Jean Grey of X-Men fame. A variety of other names have also popped up and I always hope she’ll turn out to be one of Spider-Man’s amazing friends. But the truth will be known when Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives on July 31st.
