WizKids Calls Up Eldritch Enemies From Dungeons & Dragons ‘Ravenloft: The Horrors Within’

Before we dig too deep, I want to direct you to this piece I wrote about the amazing WizKids Cthulu miniature. While you can enjoy the rad coverage of the Elder Thing, I’m directing you there at this current juncture because I feel it’s important for you to understand my thoughts on the works of H.P. Lovecraft before we move forward.

Based on the cosmic horror passages found in the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, this set of three miniatures features some iconic monsters brought into physical form by the skilled hands of the sculptors over at the WizKids studios.
The Mi-Go miniature on its 25mm base is representative of the haunting alien life forms first named in Lovecraft’s 1931 short story, “The Whisperer in Darkness”. Mi-Go are delightfully strange entities, having crustacean-like bodies with a multitude of paired limbs, odd ellipsoid heads that are covered in fleshy rings and strange antennae, and membranous fin-like wings that are used for aether flight, being a little useless in normal atmospheres but working exceptionally well in other spaces between spaces.
A really unique feature of the Mi-Go from the stories is that they can’t be captured by photography, leading me to believe that whatever D&D is going to do with them may have some really cool mechanic effects.
There is also an Elder Thing miniature with a 50mm base in this set. These entities first appeared in Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness, published in 1936. These extraterrestrial creatures were the first to make colonies on planet Earth in the Lovecraft Mythos canon, so the reason they have found themselves in the dread realms could rival the number of tentacles on their strange fibrous bodies.
Elder Things are a worrying foe and could, if played correctly, serve as a worrying friend. As entities of science and creatures who can make elves look short-lived, the application of an Elder Thing into D&D is going to make for some really fun possibilities.
The third offering of this collection is a Shoggoth miniature on a 75mm base. Soggoth are mentioned in passing in Lovecraft’s Fungi from Yuggoth, but were better established in At the Mountains of Madness. Shoggoth are worrying horrors, comprised of a multitude of eyes, mouths, tentacles, and teeth, all floating and shifting in a “protoplasmic” black slime.
Shoggoth were created by the Elder Things and served them, for a time. As is the nature of horrors on this cosmic level, some developed their own sense of self, complete with wants and desires and aspirations to not just serve, but to crave things. The Shoggoth who fought back against the Elder Things did untold damage to those first aquatic civilizations, and some even escaped the confines of the early seas to hidden spaces on land where the Elder Things could not follow.
All of these are going to be absolutely amazing additions to both the gaming table and the collectors’ shelf, and I can’t wait to see them in person when they drop in October 2026. You can pre-order now at this link.
