Mike Mignola Revisits ‘Hellboy In Hell’ With Cyrille Pomès In ‘Hellboy In Hell: Nothing But Blood’

I sat there in stunned and grieving reflection as the icon I had followed for years fell in glorious battle. H found himself finally unburdened from the weight of expectation and cosmic machinations that, frankly, he did not want to be a part of in the first place. I’m referring to the last moments in the life of Hellboy as he saved the world once more and then lost his life, transubstantiating into Mike Mignola‘s version of Hell, where he would wander and eventually pass beyond to more or less, depending on what bits of legend and lore from the pit we can believe.

Those infernal wanderings were chronicled in a title called Hellboy in Hell, and they were beautifully quiet, melancholy, and reflective of Hellboy’s time above and below. They served as further existential exploration of the character and others in the well-storied world as they had their time below the reality we know as life.

So when I learned that Mignola was returning to Hell in a brand new two-issue comic event titled Hellboy in Hell: Nothing but Blood, I was nothing short of double delighted. For those of you who have been around with us for a while, you know double delighted is my highest benchmark of excitement. Let’s get into it.

With Hellboy in Hell: Nothing but Blood, Mignola is teaming up with internationally acclaimed artist Cyrille Pomès in his Hellboy Universe debut to chronicle a demonic uprising in the underworld.

This title will be penned by Mignola, drawn and lettered by Pomès, with colors from Dave Stewart, and if I had to guess, letters by Clem Robins. I don’t know if Robins is on the title or not yet, but that guy seems to letter all the stories I enjoy in the well-worn world that Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. inhabit, so my guess is he will appear in the credits before too long.  Both issues of this limited series will feature main covers by Pomès and variant covers drawn by Mignola on issue one, and Marc Riou on issue two.

“Yes, I too thought Hellboy in Hell was a closed book — But a while back I discovered the work of Cyrille Pomés and instantly fell in love with it,” said Mignola. “We actually met, and when he said he’d like to do a Hellboy story, well, how could I say no to that? I still had half an idea for a Hell story rattling around in my head and invited him to flesh that out, so now what you have is a true collaboration on the story and his absolutely wonderful art and storytelling. I’m so happy to introduce this guy to the American comic book audience.”

Often celebrated as one of the most ambitious and important chapters in the Hellboy saga, Mignola’s Hellboy in Hell, which was originally published between 2012 and 2016, revealed the truth about Hellboy’s origins, introduced readers to his extended family, and gave us insight into how Mignola’s Hell operated. Hellboy in Hell: Nothing but Blood is going to return to this moment in Hellboy’s journey with a new adventure, taking place after the death of Satan and the fall of Pandemonium in Hellboy in Hell #8. When Hellboy sees a young woman being chased by winged beasts in the midst of an uprising against Hell’s most powerful demons, he steps in to save her, but as is normal in The Pit, nothing is as it seems, and those seeking help can be hiding daggers in their smiles.

“When I first saw compliments from a certain Mike Mignola appearing on some of my Facebook posts, I thought it was a joke — or a namesake. But it really was the artist whose early work had such a profound impact on me as a teenager, and whose evolution I’ve followed with awe ever since,” added Pomés. “During a trip to the States, I made a stop in Los Angeles, where Mike was living at the time, and took a chance: would he like to write a script for me featuring his legendary Hellboy? His response still resonates with me today: ‘It would be an honor.’”

It looks like Hellboy in Hell: Nothing But Blood #1 is set to hit shelves on October 7th, 2026. I, for one, am already excited to get both covers of this title as soon as I can.
