Marvel’s Stormbreakers Bring Isekai Variants To Marvel Comics August Releases

by Tony Thornley

This August, Marvel Comics’ Stormbreakers are taking family Marvel heroes to bold new worlds in their latest series of variant covers.

Isekai is the Japanese term for “a different world.” The term has become synonymous with a science fiction and fantasy subgenre in which a story’s protagonist is transported from a familiar setting — usually our own world — to a new, and often dangerous, environment. In August, Marvel’s eight Stormbreakers, the artists setting Marvel’s current artistic standard and style, are transporting the publisher’s greatest heroes into new worlds.

This new collection of variant covers is coming just ahead of the 25th anniversary event celebrating Marvel’s Mangaverse. That event created a whole new, and often very different, Marvel Universe, full of exciting storytelling possibilities. The characters created appeared as recently as 2014’s Spider-Verse crossover.

The current class of Marvel’s Stormbreakers include Alessandro Cappuccio (Ultimate Wolverine), Netho Diaz (X-Men), Simone Di Meo (X-Men of Apocalypse), Juan Frigeri (Ultimates), Gurihiru (Jeff the Land Shark), Jonas Scharf (Ultimate Endgame), Geoff Shaw (Wade Wilson: Deadpool), and Luciano Vecchio (Uncanny X-Men).

Check out the first five revealed covers and watch for them all across the month of August in your local comic book store.
