Some are still discovering the wonders of Tokusatsu, the greatest underappreciated Japanese genre.

Tokusatsu is the term for Japanese live-action film and television utilizing practical effects. It typically explores the genres of sci-fi, superhero, fantasy, and horror. Among the many iterations of Tokusatsu, Ultraman stands as a giant among them. Created by Eiji Tsuburaya, the series centers on a transforming hero fighting giant monsters. It inspired legendary creators like Hideaki Anno, Hideo Kojima, and Guillermo Del Toro. Its creative DNA can also be spotted in contemporary hit series like Dan Da Dan and Ultramega. The Origin of Ultraman is a documentary film detailing the creative development and legacy of this enduring superhero.

If you’re brand new to the character, I’d also recommend watching  Shin Ultraman.
