Gen Con 2026: Free League Reveals Two New ‘The One Ring’ Expansions

Even if you are not a fan of the setting, it’s hard not to see the impact that John Ronald Reuel Tolkien‘s Middle-earth stories have had on the fantasy landscape. From film to novels, comics to action figures, video games to stage plays and beyond, the hallmarks and storytelling of Tolkien’s world have influenced almost every aspect of fantasy for the past few generations and more than likely for many, many generations to come.

Being the iconic game production house that it is, Free League Publishing understands that and is the steward of The One Ring tabletop role-playing game. This high fantasy TTRPG is set in the well-storied world of Middle-earth. While The One Ring has been a fan-favorite since its launch, the gaming shelves and tables have been missing material on some iconic spaces … until now.

Coming out of Gen Con 2026 over the weekend, Free League has announced an upcoming BackerKit campaign launching in September for The One Ring, the award-winning TTRPG, featuring two new expansions and revised Core Rules.

The first is The White Tower and the Hall of Gold. It is set to be a major campaign expansion exploring Gondor and Rohan, the last great realms of Men in the west of Middle-earth. I’m very excited for this one. Rohan is a landscape I have always wanted to learn more about, and the books from Free League not only provide rules and mechanics for the table, but also serve as great lore books to dig deeper into the world with.

Additionally, there will be a new book titled Creatures Strange and Foul. It is set to be a bestiary filled with enemies from the shadows of the Third Age, including Black Númenórean spies, Haradrim champions, and ancient evils from forgotten ages.

I’m really stoked for this one. Any chance to get new mechanics and lore for horrors from the ancient ages of Middle-earth is one I am happy to take. I spend a great deal of time listening to lore videos and homebrewing mechanics for my own games, so being able to see the official stats for these ancient entities is going to be a real treat to torment my players with.

I also have word that the revised core rules will see the game getting new cover art and updated rules. The revised book will remain fully compatible with previously released supplements, so don’t worry, long-time players; this one is just to enhance, not to detract from things.

For those not playing the One Ring core system, there are also going to be adaptations of the two expansions in Dungeons & Dragons 5E released under the titles Realms of the South and Of Orcs and Evil Things.
