Kyle Baker Does Godzilla With IDW’s ‘Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents: Roar Of The Worlds’

The third of IDW Publishing’s literary daikaijū mashups brings the King of the Monsters up against familiar Martian invaders in Godzilla Monsterpiece Theatre Presents: Roar of the Worlds, written and drawn by the great Kyle Baker.

Out this very week, Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents: Roar of the Worlds is an oversize one-shot where Kyle Baker joins the Monsterpiece Theatre party to bring us Godzilla fighting for the planet against the Martian invaders from HG Wells’s The War of the Worlds.

Baker’s Godzilla tale asks the important question — what if those Martian cylinders landed not just in England but also in Japan? Well, the answer is that that puts those Martians directly in the path of the King of the Monsters. Yes, it’s daikaijū versus tripods, Earth’s King of the Monsters versus Mr Wells’s Martian invaders, guaranteed monster mayhem.

Roar of the Worlds is the third of four Monsterpiece Theatre one-shot comics, following on the heels of Tom Scioli‘s Godzilla Monsterpiece Theatre limited series. We’ve already seen Adam Tierney and Sean Peacock‘s Shakespearean mashup in Romeo & Juliet & Godzilla, and Frank Tieri and Ilias Kyriazis’s very topical Godzilla’s The Odyssey, and now Baker joins the fun with Roar of the Worlds, which also contains the latest instalment of Tom Scioli‘s Robin Hood and the Monster of Nottingham backup strip.

Baker’s been one of my favourite makers of comics for decades now, where I first fell in love with his work drawing the Andy Helfer-written Shadow series of 1988-89. His library of works is just packed with must-buy books, whether that’s the ridiculous funny comedy of The Cowboy Wally Show, Why I Hate Saturn, I Die At Midnight, You Are Here, and his The Bakers books or his work on Marvel and DC superheroes, bringing all his style and comedy to more familiar characters — do go find his work on Plastic Man and Deadpool — or his more serious works, including his Nat Turner graphic novel, shining a light on US slavery and the 19th Century slave rebellion, or Truth: Red, White & Black, where he and Robert Morales introduced Isaiah Bradley to Captain America’s history.

So seeing his name on this book immediately elevates it to a must-buy for me, and hopefully for a hell of a lot of you out there.
