Wizards Of The Coast Announces ‘Secret Lair Commander Deck: Hatsune Miku’

by Anton Kromoff

Welcome to the table,

There was a time in my life when, at least four hours a day, seven days a week, I was playing Magic: The Gathering. I had thousands upon thousands of cards going back to Alpha and would sit and gleefully clash with friends and strangers across the table. We swapped stories and shared pizza and snacks.

My favorite decks were a rat deck that was sixty cards and tended to end the game around turn four, and a white deck that was around 120 cards. By turn five or six, that one would amass a huge amount of life and stop anyone else from playing anything against me. It would just serve as a passive annoying observer as the rest of the table would trash each other to bits and then get stomped by a congregation of angels and old ladies who understood the secret power of runes.

A large majority of my old collection helped a friend keep his small comic shop open for a few months. My current collection is mostly a few decks that are fun to play and a lot of the Dungeons & Dragons-themed cards.

The reason for my slow decline of play is that I have had to move mostly to Arena. My local gaming shops are not wheelchair accessible or they serve as chaotic daycare centers. Trying to play a game of Magic with a bunch of unwatched kids running around screaming and throwing stuff is not exactly my idea of fun.

Just because I’m not playing as regularly as I want to does not mean I am not still checking every deck and Secret Lair drop as it comes out and keeping up with the latest MTG news!

With that in mind, let me tell you about the new Secret Lair Commander Deck: Hatsune Miku, a new ready-to-play, 100-card Commander deck celebrating the global virtual singer through artwork, gameplay, and the unmistakable energy of a stadium-sized pop performance.

Designed by MTG’s Carmen Klomparens, this deck is the first Universes Beyond Secret Lair Commander Deck. It combines the creativity of Secret Lair with one of the world’s most recognizable virtual performers. Headlined by Trostani, Selesnya’s Voice and Miku, Song of the People, the deck invites players to flood the board with creatures, gain massive amounts of life, and turn that momentum into a performance worthy of an encore.

The Secret Lair Commander Deck: Hatsune Miku captures the bright, expressive, and collaborative spirit that has made Hatsune Miku a global phenomenon. The deck features 13 cards with new art by Japanese artists, including a special illustration by KEI, Hatsune Miku’s first software packaging illustrator, for Miku, Song of the People. Additional artists, including fan-favorite creators such as 八三/Hassan, and さいとうなおき/Naoki Saito, help bring Miku to life. That visual celebration carries through to the mana base with foil borderless basic lands featuring new artwork, making the deck feel like a full Miku production from the first land drop to the final encore.

Cards like Archangel of Thune, Aetherflux Reservoir, Crested Sunmare, Rhys the Redeemed, Voice of the Blessed, and Mirari’s Wake help players build an ever-growing board state, gain life in huge bursts, and transform that life total into a win condition.

This deck is packed with rad cards and will include:

  • One ready-to-play 100-card Commander deck
  • 12 Foil borderless cards featuring new artwork
  • 7 Foil borderless basic Plains featuring new artwork
  • 7 Foil borderless basic Forests featuring new artwork

Until next time, I moved to a new city and went into a local gaming store. The guy behind the counter looked up at my wife and I, did not say hello, kiss my butt, or anything. He just looked up, sized us up, and looked back down at his magazine.

Another dude walked in behind us, and the guy looked up and said hello to him and welcomed him into the store. If you have seen the movie Pretty Woman … I felt very much like that charming prostitute who was not welcomed in the fancy store. This guy did not know me. Did not know I had spent my life in service to gaming. Did not know I had been to regionals, had traveled to gaming conventions across the land, and was the Senior Staff Writer for gaming at Comicon.

He just saw a dude in a wheelchair and his cute wife and thought we were tourists or something. Not worth his time or energy. So we left and never went back. That hurt my heart because I have not found another spot in the area to play MTG, and I do love this game so much. I’m teaching my wife and some new friends to play … but there is a weird disconnect not being able to play at a shop.
