As a lifelong Star Trek fan, I’ve found everyone celebrating this year’s 60th Anniversary delightful, to say the least. It’s given us all time to relax and reflect on a future where we can all venture into the stars in a bold new way. It has also been an opportunity to connect with friends and other fans to share our love of Trek.
Between chatting with the gang in the bullpen, rewatching DS9, and DMing my friend Ken all the random Trek memes in my feed at 3am when the state of the world feels overwhelming, this year has been a really special time to be a fan.
To add to the fun of 60 years of Trek, my pals at Potter sent me over the Star Trek: The Ultimate Trivia Deck to check out, and it has been a ton of fun to play with. Each card conjures up memories of past episodes and things I need to go back and watch.
The Ultimate Trivia Deck has 200 cards with 400 questions split into four categories that include Technology, Characters, Events and Anomalies, and Planets, Places, and Cultures. The questions are pulled together by well-lauded author Robb Pearlman, who is a great choice for this project. Pearlman has a lot of experience in the pop-culture space and is a member of the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers, so he has a grasp of this kind of landscape.
What’s rad is that each card includes two questions, one a little easier and one a little more difficult. This makes it more accessible to those of us like Ken and me who dig deep into the love and lore of Trek, to be able to ask those less versed in the lore and history of Trek to join in on the fun.
This is one of those perfect little card games you can keep in the glove box or the back of the car to take into the brewery or pub when you want to play a game but don’t want to deal with a ton of pieces or fuss.
It’s also a great jump-start for practicing for a Trek-themed trivia night. The rulebook that comes with it has instructions with several ways to play. You can set game night up with teams, one-vs-one duels, or even single-player mode. You can use these cards in all sorts of ways to have a good time and celebrate Trek.
