Workshop Wednesday — The Tomb Kings Of Khemri Are On The Rise In ‘Warhammer: The Old World’

by Anton Kromoff

Welcome to the table,

Workshop Wednesday is my little slice of the week where I can dive into all sorts of things related to Games Workshop. Today we are talking about some of my favorite forces from Warhammer: The Old World; the Tomb Kings of Khermi. Let’s get into it!

The Tomb Kings have always fascinated me. I really enjoy narratives about lands of the dead where the actual dead are out and about, being active in the world and not just existing as mindless, hungry shamblers.

After some backstabbing by the priest Nagash, who cast a great ritual to raise the dead across the world, the spirits of those who had died are given life once more, bound to the bones and desiccated flesh buried in the sand and in ornate tombs.

Host of Nehekhara Army Reinforcement Set

The risen monarchs of old, of course, were not content with the power that had just risen under their command. They set about raising more minions, long-dead warriors, strange priests, and ancient horrors to fill their armies and ride across the land, bringing war and conquest in their wake.

While they have all sorts of oddities in their armies, the raw numbers of the skeletal warriors, chariot riders, and archers are intimidating when you see them hit the table against your forces.

As an example, my pals at Games Workshop recently sent me the Host of Nehekhara Army Reinforcement Set (currently in preorder) to check out. I’m absolutely enthralled by these forces and the sheer scale of them on the field of play.

This set is that is the perfect way to start a new Tomb Kings of Khemri collection, or if you are a long-time player, a great way to grow the forces you already have at hand.

The box set comes with 78 minis, 36 of them being skeleton warriors, 36 of them being skeleton archers, and six being the epic skeleton chariots with undead horses and riders.

The warriors are really rad. They have a ton of customization options. You can kit them out with tall shields and either swords or spears. These units can also build out two champions, and my favorite bit … there are musicians with two different horns that can be built as musicians to keep the beat of battle going, or can be built as standard bearers with different toppers to really make this army feel like your own.

The Skeleton Archers also have a ton of options, and two champions as well. The archers also have musicians that can go with either a horn or a drum, and standards for two standard bearers with cool ornate toppers for their icons of loyalty and power.

The skeleton chariots are standout units for me as well. These units have a slew of bits to really customize units to fit your meta or personal flavor. There are three different decorative plates for the front of the chariot, two additional wings for your champion’s chariot with three different crests for the horse’s yoke, and three different blades for the draft pole.

Each of the chariots can be assembled with a quiver of arrows and a bundle of spears mounted to the chariot frame. There are even musician options and standard bearer options to add to your chariots to go along with the rider, who has multiple head options.

I would have loved to see some weird variations to the undead horse mounts, but honestly, this whole set is already stuffed to the brim with minis, so it is hard to complain if an undead army is what you want to bring to bear at the gaming table.

This whole set has 476 plastic components, 72 25mm square bases, six 60mm by 120mm rectangle bases, the guide, of course, so you know how to build them. It also includes two rad water transfer sheets with almost 500 symbols and icons for Nehekaran Hieroglyphs, icons for Geheb, Ptra, Asapha, and more, all ready to drop on your minis to make your units even more your very own.

Tomb Swarms

I wanted to take a quick second to talk about the Tomb Swarms (currently online only) while I have you here. I don’t have these myself, but I freaking love them.

It is so cool that these are units made of the dead husks of scarabs, spiders, and other horrific poisonous entities that live in the sands. These husks are animated by the magics of the Lich Priests and rise up in these odd, swarming, clicking piles of bone and bugs as they move through the shadows, hunting down those they can catch unaware on the field of battle.

These brilliant resin kits will allow you to create three Tomb Swarms for your Tomb Kings of Khemri army. There are so many details in these renders, and the lore around these guys is so cool to me. Ever since those scarabs ate that dude in The Mummy all those years ago, I have had a soft spot in my heart for the horrors of swarms of awful desert bugs and the undead that puppet them.

This kit contains 18 resin components and comes with three 40mm square bases. Once you get them all painted up, you can field them at the table and unleash some truly deadly plagues upon your opponents.

Until next time, the Tomb Kings have really earned a spot in my heart in the Old World sets.  I think of all those units, at least from a lore and pure vibes perspective, they are my favorite. The new Host of Nehekhara Army Reinforcement Set will be a super solid place for you to jump on if you are thinking about adding these to your own forces. Check out the Tone Pro paints while you are at it, as they work sooooo nicely and are right now my favorite paints to use at the table.
