Cracking Ceilings, Taking Names, Changing The Game – It’s Femme Magnifique

by Staff

Three days ago, the crowdfunding campaign launched for a project already catching the attention of the comics community. Spearheaded by former head of Vertigo, Shelly Bond, and Kristy and Brian Miller, the founders of Hi-Fi Color Design, the proposed book, Femme Magnifique, sets out to present 30 comics stories to “salute women of pop, politics, art, and science”. That goal is enough to set this project apart as something that could impact the future of comics publishing, but the roster of names added to the list of contributors further boosts the signal on this campaign.
From Tess Fowler to Kelly Sue DeConnick, Elsa Charretier, and most recently announced, Gerard Way, comics pros coming from a number of different artistic traditions are lining up for Femme Magnifique.

Eight of the stories and creative teams behind them have been announced, including:

  • Kat Blaque — story & art by Tess Fowler with color by Hi-Fi
  • Sally Ride — story by Cecil Castellucci, art by Philip Bond, color by Hi-Fi
  • Hillary Clinton — story by Kelly Sue DeConnick, art by Elsa Charretier, color by Hi-Fi
  • Cindy Whitehead — story & art by Jim Rugg
  • Harriet Tubman — story by Chuck Brown, art by Sanford Greene
  • Ursula K. Le Guin — story by Robin Furth, art by Devaki Neogi

And the eighth story will be by Gerard Way and Marley Zarcone.
The campaign has already put up previews of some of the stories that will be included in the volume:

The book will come in a digital edition, print edition, “free speech edition”, an “ultimate edition” and more.
Here’s the trailer for the Femme Magnifique campaign:

The campaign is seeking $40,000 and will close on March 16th, 2017. Don’t miss out on a chance to take part in a project set to make definitive positive impact on comics and culture through focusing on the achievements of women and bringing together creators who want to see more diversity in the stories told through the comics medium.
