Boom Announces Goonies-Style Series Misfit City, From Writer Of 10 Things I Hate About You

Boom! Box, and imprint of Boom! Studios will be publishing a new monthly comic series from the writer of Legally Blonde and 10 Things I Hate About You, they have announced. Misfit City will be written by Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith and Kurt Lustgarten, with art by Naomi Franquiz, and will arrive in May.
The book has some recognizable themes–in an ironic turning of elements on their head, the setting for the comic will be a town where a famous 80’s kids’ movie was filmed, such as a film like The Goonies, and in that town, some kids find a treasure map connected to a pirate and have a life-changing experience.
Pop culture fiction and reality blend in this “adventure” comic:
Nothing’s happened in Wilder’s hometown since they filmed that cult kids’ adventure movie there in the ’80s…but that’s ancient history. Until one day, she and her friends come upon a centuries-old treasure map drawn by the infamous pirate Black Mary…and they find themselves on a real-life adventure in the town they dreamed of escaping.
Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith drew inspiration for the tale from growing up in a small Pacific Northwest town, she says, and longing for adventure. Kurt Lustgarten adds, “We wanted to evoke the feel of every great 1980s kids classic adventure movie with a riot grrrl twist.” The parallel with The Goonies is intentional, the creative team says, since, “Girls need their version of The Goonies—and with Misfit City, we’re giving it to them.”
Artist Naomi Franquiz is looking forward to bringing “diverse and body-positive cast of characters that I hope young readers can really see themselves in” to the book.
Misfit City #1 will feature a main cover by Franquiz, along with a variant cover by Ester Zejn and a treasure map variant by Paulina Ganucheau (Zodiac Starforce, Another Castle).
