A Woman Taking On The Demons Of Hell – The Magdalena Arrives This Week From Top Cow

 
This week sees the arrival of Top Cow’s new series The Magdalena, written by Tini Howard and drawn by Christian DiBari, with colors by Mike Spicer and letters by Troy Peteri. This book has a very interesting vibe in the hands of Howard, who is a female writer writing a female lead. And one of the title leads is a character who has been really specifically designed to be in her 30’s and therefore correcting a gap in age presented for female heroes in comics at the moment. Add to that DiBari’s really sensitive and edgy linework, often quite textured, with a clear love for horror elements, and we get a book that has that added, extra punch. Spicer’s colors are equally on point and create an atmosphere that sets this book apart. This is a book to keep your eyes on.

So, what’s it all about? Well, our lead character, the Magdalena, is a descendant of Mary Magdalene from the gospels, and she’s also a descendant of, you guessed it, Jesus Christ. That makes her super-powered against evil forces. But all is not sunshine and roses, since she’s looking for the next Magdalena to enlist, and that is not going to be any easy task for either of them.
As Top Cow explain:
The Magdalena has always defended the world from demonic evil, empowered by the blood of Jesus Christ and Mary Magdalene in her veins. But when a brush with death leaves her gravely wounded, Patience decides to seek out the next in the bloodline and train her replacement. The replacement, meanwhile, is having enough trouble with finding her purpose even without the whole holy- warrior gig.
