Tintin Meets LeCarré: Previewing Rich Tommaso’s Spy Seal #1 From Image Comics

by Olly MacNamee

Out this coming Wednesday is Rich Tomasso’s European flavoured series, Spy Seal from Image Comics, is described as:

“THE CORTEN-STEEL PHOENIX,” Part One Journey into the thrilling world of international espionage as one of Britain’s most covert MI-6 divisions, The Nest, recruits a brand-new secret agent to their team: SPY SEAL! An exciting new comic series—reminiscent of The Adventures of Tintin and Usagi Yojimbo—and created by SHE WOLF author, RICH TOMMASO.

And, we here at the classified, top secret Comicon.com HQ, have managed to clandestinely intercept a few pages ahead of this week’s new comic book day. As a child of both European and American comic books, I have a soft spot for Tintin, Asterix and Lucky Luke even though these icons of the European tradition have never really broken America. But, maybe, just maybe, this comic coming from Image Comics as it does, could change this attitude even though Tomasso’s fears for this comic are well known by now.
I do hope he is proven wrong. Image, along with Dark Horse and other American publishers, are pushing the boundaries of what has come before and we have a much richer comic book landscape because of it with so many more genres being represented on comic book stores’ shelves. I just hope there is a sustainable market for it all.
Maybe in reading this preview, you too might pick up a copy of this great-looking series. It certainly suggest you get a lot for your dollar if these few pages are anything to go by.

Spy Seal #1 is out Wednesday the 16th August from Rich Tommaso and Image Comics
