The Kaiju Battle Rages On In New Pacific Rim Uprising Trailer

by Erik Amaya

If there’s one thing you can say about Pacific Rim Uprising is that it looks cheesy. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
As seen in this new trailer released by Legendary Pictures, John Boyega’s Jake Pentecost is something of a bad boy, but Mako (Rinko Kikuchi) believes he can be the man his father wanted him to be. And, it seems, part of that is training a bunch of kids to be Jaeger pilots. If that’s not the definition of a cheesy monster movie sequel plot, then take a look at this trailer and be reminded.

But the cheese factor feels intentional, as does the unreal quality to the Kaiju fights glimpsed so far. They’re overlit and the buildings around the monsters and the robots look fake, but it all resembles the look of Showa Period kaiju flicks like War of the Gargantuas and Godzilla vs. Monster Zero. That has to be a conscious decision on the part of director Steven S. DeKnight to evoke that tone. And, really, it is one we should be more comfortable with.
Nonetheless, it may still leave audiences cold with Pacific Rim Uprising opens on March 23rd.
