DeWanda Wise Leaves Captain Marvel; Cites Scheduling Conflicts

by Erik Amaya

Sadly, DeWanda Wise will no longer be part of the Captain Marvel phenomenon.
Deadline reports the She’s Gotta Have It star has dropped out of Marvel Studios film, currently in production, due to scheduling conflicts with her Netflix series. Wise signed on to play a still-undisclosed character back in January.
At the time, many assumed she was playing Monica Rambeau, a woman from New Orleans who manifested light-absorption powers after being exposed to extra-dimensional energy. First appearing in 1982, Monica took the name of Captain Marvel around the time of the first Marvel Captain Marvel’s death in the graphic novel The Death of Captain Marvel. And, of course, she was the third comic book character to go by that name if you count the character currently going by the name “Shazam,” who will also appear in a 2019 feature film.
Meanwhile, that first Marvel Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell, will appear in the film by way of actor Jude Law.
Captain Marvel also stars Brie Larson as the titular Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn as the primary antagonist. It’s scheduled for release on March 8th, 2019.
