The Walking Dead’s Seth Gilliam & Adult Film Star Stoya Headline Dean Haspiel’s New Play

As we’ve mentioned previously, Dean Haspiel has been working on a new play called The Last Bar at the End of the World, which will be staged in New York City in the month of April, rounding out a trilogy of plays the comic creator has written.
Thin Duke Productions/SparkPlug Productions have announced further details, that we can expect The Walking Dead star Seth Gilliam and Adult Film star Stoya headlining the cast of the play.

*This is Gilliam’s first turn as a young family-man-to-be dealing with something scarier than zombies, werewolves or even Shakespearean verse: becoming a Dad.

*Stoya takes a step away from the fantasy worlds of her films and of the “angel of death” role she played in her stage debut (Haspiel’s last play Harakiri Kane) to portray an everyday New Yorker on the train, who may or may not be wilder than her previous characters.

*This is Haspiel’s third stage production, and perhaps his most personal one: the main character Buford is a graphic novelist.

Critic Adam McGovern described Harakiri Kane as “pop-philosophy with no pretension yet unimpeachable insight; a dive-bar Wings of Desire.” The dive bar is back in this tragicomedy about Buford, his best friend, and the sages, teachers, lovers, and losers that fill up his Brooklyn cityscape. “Last Bar” asks the question, “Why are we here and what do we have to do to move on?”

Director Philip Cruise, Haspiel, and cast members Ed Miller and Gilliam all met as students at SUNY purchase, and have continued to work and play together ever since. Several of the amazingly talented performers in this cast were part of Dean’s sold-out run of Harakiri Kane in Brooklyn last November, and readily agreed to be part of his next project, including Stoya, who had previously collaborated with Haspiel on a comic in Heavy Metal. Ian W. Hill and Berit Johnson also return as production designers, as does Holly Pocket McCaffrey on costumes. These artists all believe in Dean’s emerging theatrical voice and have joined forces to present this off-kilter examination of NYC life in the “post-truth” era.

Philip Cruise’s Thin Duke Productions has been producing plays in New York since 2003, including Phoebe Farber’s Jump It (2016), Tom Ellis’s Bright Day (2004), and Mac Wellman’s Seven Blowjobs (2003).
SparkPlug Productions is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit theatre company founded by Christopher Lee and Rebekkah Ross, Artistic Directors, to create performance opportunities for artists they believe in. The goal is to produce new works by bringing artists from different disciplines together. This cross-pollination of artistic processes enhances the cooperative spirit.
