Batgirl Film Finds New Writer With Bumblebee’s Christina Hodson

 

The Batgirl film is back on the DC films slate with a new writer taking over for Joss Whedon.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bumblebee scribe Christina Hodson is onboard for the latest draft. Presumably, it will be a page-one rewrite as Whedon eventually admitted he could not “crack” a good idea for Barbara Gordon, daughter of Gotham City police commissioner Jim Gordon and costumed hero in her own right as Batgirl.
Whedon, noted feminist and bus schedule enthusiast said as much when he departed from the project in February. “It took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story,” he said in a statement at the time. The Serenity filmmaker was first announced as writer and director of Batgirl after he was spotted on the Warner Bros. lot in March of 2017. It later turned out he was also supervising rewrites and additional photography for Justice League. Following his departure a few month ago, many wonder if the project would surface again.
Hodson worked in the Transformers writer’s room for the last few years, ultimately winning the opportunity to write the series’ first spinoff film, Bumblebee and developed a Birds of Prey feature film for Warner Bros. prior to the creation of the DC film universe. It remains to be seen if any of that material will survive into then new version, but at least Batgirl now has someone involved who is sufficiently versed in the character to find her story.
