Eternals Film To Join The MCU Slate

 

The Eternals will eventually become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“Eternals is one of many many many things that we are actively beginning to have creative discussions about to see if we believe in them enough to put them on a slate,” Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige told The Wrap on Sunday. The film will be part of the company’s “Phase 4” film slate following the release of the fourth Avengers film in 2019.
Created by Jack Kirby, the Eternals were a race of proto-humans engineered by the cosmic Celestials with the intent of installing them as the world’s first super-powered protectors. Later experiments led to the race achieving the power to control vast amounts of cosmic energy. Infighting, civil wars, colonization and a chance encounter with the Kree followed; leading to Inhumans, mutants and other major anchor points in the Marvel universe. They also fight the failed aspect of the Celestial experiment: the monstrous Deviants.
According to The Wrap, the eventual Eternals film will focus on Sersi (also created by Kirby), a fourth generation Eternal with the abilities of flight, strength, immortality and molecular manipulation who may have been the inspiration for the Marvel universe’s version of the legendary Greek Circe. The character has strong ties to the mainline Marvel universe thanks to her Avengers membership in the 1990s.
Should the film get the fast-track, it ties to earlier comments Feige made about Phase 4’s cosmic emphasis. Those comments indicated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will preview some of that emphasis. He also mentioned the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel will also offer a taste of Phase 4’s status quo. Hopefully, that means Spidey will face Ziron the Tester.
But Feige also told the site his main concerns are the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel, the fourth Avengers film and the Spider-Man sequel.
