Star Trek: Discovery Joins Comic-Con Hall H Programming
by Erik Amaya
Comic-Con International: San Diego’s Hall H programming is becoming decidedly more television focused, with Star Trek: Discovery as the latest TV show to move into the convention’s largest event space.
As announced earlier today, the series will be the focus of a panel discussion on Friday July 20th at 1:30pm. Series stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Mary Wiseman, Anthony Rapp, Mary Chieffo, Wilson Cruz, and Anson Mount will appear alongside executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin. Upcoming guest star Tig Notaro, who play’s Chief Engineer Reno, will moderate the event.
The move indicates just how much more important television has become to Comic-Con in the last decade. When Hall H first opened its doors, it was the premiere spot to see new trailers for films like Sin City and the early Marvel Studios movies. It was also the site of the first public appearance of the Avengers cast. But film events, including a special appearance by Steven Spielberg to promote The Adventures of Tintin, waned in popularity. While Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. continue to command packed houses, fans really come in droves for television programs like Supernatural, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones and Doctor Who.
Game of Thrones is taking the year off due to the odd scheduling of its eighth and final season, leaving open a slot in Hall H’s programming schedule. Star Trek: Discovery will have the chance to prove its popularity in geek circles by filling the room to capacity. And considering that it will follow The Walking Dead‘s traditional Friday afternoon panel, there will definitely be some seats open.
Star Trek: Discovery returns in 2019.
