SDCC 2018: A Mystery Brings Captain Pike Aboard Star Trek: Discovery In Season 2 Trailer

by Erik Amaya

Though the U.S.S. Discovery was en route to Vulcan to pick up its new captain when the first season of Star Trek: Discovery concluded, the new second season trailer released at Comic-Con International: San Diego on Friday reveals a mysterious series of red bursts across space has forced Enterprise Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) into assuming command of the advanced science vessel. And, it seems, the message is tied to his science officer, Mr. Spock, who has taken a leave of absence to investigate the mysterious bursts in his way.

It also seems the bridge crew will get a greater focus as both Lt. Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) and Lt. Detmer (Emily Coutts) get a key moment in the trailer.
But the big news from yesterday’s panel was the return of Pike’s first officer. Played by Majel Barrett in the original Star Trek pilot. The original “Number One” will be played on Discovery by Rebecca Romijn. Presumably, she will take command of the Enterprise while Pike is away.
To be honest, the use of Lenny Kravitz’s “Fly Away” in the trailer is a little bit lame, but the actual moments glimpses of the second season suggest Discovery will play up to its strengths and inject some more humor into the proceedings. Which is really what I want from the show.
