SDCC 2018: Dr. Horrible Returns In New One-Shot
by James Ferguson
Can you believe that Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog came out ten years ago? Since then, fans like myself have been hoping for more from this particular Joss Whedon creation. Fortunately, Whedon himself announced a brand new one-shot coming soon from Dark Horse Comics during a panel at San Diego Comic Con. Dr. Horrible: Best Friends Forever is written by Whedon, illustrated by Jose Maria Beroy and Sara Soler, and colored by Dan Jackson. It will feature cover art by Fabio Moon and a variant cover by Francesco Francavilla.
If you somehow missed Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, you are in for a treat. This came about during the writer’s strike in 2008 and went on to become a pop culture sensation. It was one of the first web series to really break out. Created by Joss Whedon and written by him and his brothers Zack and Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen, the movie musical follows Dr. Horrible (Neil Patrick Harris), an aspiring supervillain, as he’s thwarted by his nemesis, Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion) time and time again. The two fight for the love of Penny (Felicia Day).
Dr. Horrible: Best Friends Forever picks up with the time temptress, Hourglass in dire trouble. She turns to the team of famous best friends, Dr. Horrible and Captain Hammer. They are most definitely best friends…right?
Whedon says:
What a pleasure it is to be back in this world, putting words into these characters’ mouths and saying, ‘say these words, mouths’ and then they do. Each member of the Hammerverse—sorry, Doc, that’s what it’s called, he registered it—is a delightful, bigger than life character, but more importantly, on a very human level, they’re idiots. You will thrill to their adventures and weep for their pain, or maybe not weep, maybe just, I don’t know, itchy nose. Based on Actual Events.
Dr. Horrible: Best Friends Forever is set for release on November 14th, 2018.
