Since it was first announced, the new Men in Black was said to have ties to the original film series. Now, one tie has finally emerged.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Emma Thompson will reprise her role as Agent O in the upcoming Men in Black. The film stars Tessa Thompson as a newly inducted member of the agency who finds herself assigned to Chris Hemsworth’s more seasoned veteran agent. Set in the London Bureau, the plot will see them learning to work together while facing a new intergalactic threat.
Meanwhile, Thompson’s Agent O will remain the head of the organization as established in Men in Black 3. The character replaced Rip Torn’s Zed, who was said to have died just before the events of the third film began. Agent O was also played by Alice Eve during the third film’s 1969 portion.
As was always stated, the new Men in Black is less of a reboot than a spinoff, with the adventures of Agents J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) an established part of the film universe’s history. Thompson’s return definitely solidifies that idea.
Directed by F. Gary Grey, the film also features Liam Neeson, Kumail Nanjiani and Rafe Spall. It is scheduled for a June 14, 2019 release.
