There Are So Many Things To Love About Super Mario Party

It’s hard to know where to begin with my deep love of Super Mario Party. The highly anticipated game, released on the Nintendo Switch two weeks ago and I haven’t stopped playing it. Well, obviously I ate food, showered, and went to my day job. However, all free time has been spent playing this absolutely addicting, wonderful game.

One of the things that makes this game such a complete package of fun, are the many different modes you can play. Unlike the original games, you choose your characters prior to choosing your game mode. There you are, with three other players venturing into a play park that contains several different game modes. I’m here to report that each and every single one of these game modes is fantastic. Each one brings a unique something to the table.
For example, the highly anticipated river-challenge mode is an action packed race to beat the clock. Not only do you have to perform well in the mini-games, but you have to keep rowing in between. Something that Super Mario Party does well is they incorporate the motion controls with the joy-cons in a really cool way. You actually make a rowing motion with your joy-con to survive this mode.
Another fun feature is a music, beat oriented mode which I found to be quite challenging. Here’s the thing, I’ve always been kind of an expert at Mario Party games. I never found them to be super challenging. I can’t say that about this one. I think I’ve finally met my match, particularly with this beat-oriented mode. You have to use your joy-cons accurately to succeed. While difficult at times, the mode is sure to make you laugh out loud.
Don’t worry though, there is a classic board game mode that will make you feel nostalgic, except for the fact that the graphics are stunning! With that comes a fun addition called “ally’s.” If you land on an ally space you randomly select a character to join you on your journey collecting stars. They provide you with a dice customized to their style and they roll an additional dice for you every time it’s your turn. This guarantees at least one more move each turn. It really adds a higher level of strategy to a game that normally is pretty straightforward.
All in all, I am absolutely thrilled with this game and I am hoping that the open format of the play park will lead to downloadable content in the future. Be sure to grab your copy of Super Mario Party for the Nintendo Switch today.
