Cutter Is On Jennifer’s Trail In A Preview Of The Black Lightning Mid-Season Finale
by Erik Amaya
“The Book of Rebellion” continues on Black Lightning as Jennifer (China Anne McClain) and Khalil (Jordan Calloway) run from Cutter (Kearran Giovanni), Tobias’s (Marvin “Krondon” James III) newest hired muscle. She’s an assassin and a tracker. And she may have Jen dead to rights if this preview of next week’s mid-season finale is anything to go by.
Meanwhile, it looks like the rest of the Pierce family is at the breaking point with Jeff (Cress Williams) losing his perspective, Lynn (Christine Adams) tearing apart Jen’s room and Anissa (Nafessa Williams) calling Jeff out on his mistakes. Then again, she seems the most stable at this point. Maybe she’ll have what it takes to save Jen.
Or, who knows, maybe Jen will die — that would be a genuine shock on this show after the damp squib that was Gambi’s (James Remar) “death” earlier this season. It was such a blatant fake-out, I gave it no truck here in this space. But maybe it was done to establish that Jen’s death, should it happen, is a real stake the show may not be prepared to take back.
Maybe that’s why she and Khalil are getting such a focus. They’re actually a really good pair. They communicate with one another in an honest and real way. And even if Khalil has anger issues from his implants and the way Tobias abused him, it seems he’s willing to talk things through instead of shutting down. That’s pretty remarkable considering the way Jeff, Lynn, Gambi and Anissa all close ranks around their emotions. Should Jen survive and Khalil end up welcomed into the Lightning Family, maybe their ease at talking will rub off on the others.
Which would be well timed as Tobias has seemingly pieced together Black Lightning’s greatest secret. Even though she’s in tears, Lynn might want to think about getting out of the house.
Black Lightning airs Tuesdays on The CW.
