Funimation has given us a first look (subtitled in English!) of the new adaptation of Natsuki Takaya’s shoujo fantasy series, Fruits Basket. Fruits Basket is the story of a high school student Tohru Honda, who meets the Sohma family, a group of individuals cursed by animals in the Chinese Zodiac. The curse is a secret hidden by the Sohma family, which causes them to transform into the animal who cursed them if they’re held by members of the opposite sex.
The original anime ran twenty-six episodes back in 2001, but the manga continued well into 2006, meaning there’s plenty of new material to animate, and this series promises to adapt all of it. The new series will be directed by Yoshihide Ibata, known for his work on the parody of Attack on Titan, Attack on Titan: Junior High. Series lead Tohru Honda will be voiced by Manaka Iwami (Gamers), while the Sohma brothers Yuki and Kyo will be voiced by Nobunaga Shimazaki (Black Clover) and Yuma Uchida (Banana Fish), respectively.
No season is currently announced for this new series, but it’ll air in 2019.
