Black Panther, Marvel’s Spider-Man Get WGA Nominations

by Erik Amaya

Even though Black Panther was shut out at the Golden Globes last night, its list of nominations continues to grow. Just this morning, the Writer’s Guild of America gave it a nod for Best Adapted Screenplay in its annual awards list. Based on characters created by Jack Kirby, Stan Lee and a small army of writers and artists over the years, the screenplay is credited to director Ryan Coogler and co-writer Joe Robert Cole.
But Black Panther was not the only Marvel product to get WGA recognition. The guild also gave the Playstation 4 exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man a nomination in the Video Game Writing category. Anyone who has played the game can tell you why. Batman: The Enemy Within also received a nomination despite the implosion of developer Telltale Games.
Of course, it remains to be seen if Black Panther can actually win any of these awards or if it can make the distinction of a Oscar nomination for Best Picture. But every nomination it receives during the award season further legitimizes the superhero genre as a format of artistic merit.
