Uncanny X-Men #14 Makes A Deal With The Devil

by Tony Thornley

The X-Men are no strangers to morally grey alliances, with former villains and outright criminals joining their ranks. Perhaps the darkest alliances of their existence are ahead of them though…

Matthew Rosenberg, Salvador Larocca, Guru-eFX, and Joe Caramagna put the team in some tough spots this issue. But with one ally returning, and two more on the horizon, will it all be okay?

Cyclops and Wolverine strike a deal with Val Cooper, a favor for a favor, to try to gain further allies in the world. They also discover that the Mauraders have attacked the Morlocks once again. However, they quickly realize that they may be able to kill two birds with one stone…

First of all, on a personal note, Rosenberg brought my favorite B-list X-Man back to the team this issue. So I was incredibly happy by that development, especially considering his characterization was on-point. It was a welcome fandom win. This issue was full of moments like that though, which is why it works.

It included Scott Summers making tough choices, the team doing things for the greater good, and two different questionable allegiances, all coming together in a packed but enjoyable issue. The only downside is that a couple of the characters- Moonstar and Karma specifically- have still done little three issues since their return, but there seems to be some set-up here for that to change. I hope it does, because this is such a rich cast, and not giving them time to shine is a disservice.

Larocca’s work continues to shine. His depiction of the villains in particular is great, with Dark Beast coming off extremely frightening, and Scrambler’s powers getting their horrifying due. He also moves the camera in a very cinematic way, cutting the action scenes like a frantic action movie. On the downside, his depiction of Wolfsbane is extremely off-model, and he can’t seem to make Cyclops’ costume work. Otherwise, this is a great looking issue.

Things haven’t been darker for the X-Men, but this creative team is still able to give them hope in such a dark world. This is the boost they need.

Uncanny X-Men #14 is available now from Marvel Comics.
