Angelina Jolie may be making her Marvel Cinematic Debut.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the former Lara Croft is in talks to join the cast of Marvel’s upcoming film The Eternals. Based on the Marvel comic book created by Jack Kirby, the Eternals were a race of proto-humans engineered by the cosmic Celestials with the intent of installing them as the world’s first super-powered protectors. Later experiments led to the race achieving the power to control vast amounts of cosmic energy. Infighting, civil wars, colonization and a chance encounter with the Kree followed; leading to Inhumans, mutants and other major anchor points in the Marvel universe. They also constantly fight against a failed aspect of the Celestial experiment: the monstrous Deviants.

The script, by Matthew and Ryan Firpo, will reportedly center on Sersi (also created by Kirby), a fourth generation Eternal with the abilities of flight, strength, immortality and molecular manipulation who may have been the inspiration for the Marvel universe’s version of the legendary Greek god Circe. The character also has strong ties to the mainline Marvel universe thanks to her Avengers membership in the 1990s. It is currently unclear if Jolie will play Sersi or another Eternal.

The film, to be directed by Chloe Zhao, was fast-tracked in the wake of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 debacle and will seemingly takes its place on the calendar as director James Gunn cannot return to the production until 2021. But it also opens up a new avenue within the MCU, bringing some of Kirby’s wildest concepts to the screen. And that’s something worth celebrating.

The Eternals is not yet scheduled for release.
