Brooklyn Nine-Nine 6.18: Jake & His Suicide Squad Take Down The Commissioner

by Gary Catig

Jake’s gathering of his Suicide Squad starts off shaky because of all the animosity. Holt and Madeline Wuntch exchange insulting barbs and the Vulture continues his typical me first attitude. Only CJ seems to be in good spirits but he’s usually oblivious to everything. Though they have their own reasons, they all agree that Commissioner Kelly needs to be taken down. As they bring it in for a team cheer, they all instead begin bickering.
[*Spoilers For 6.18 Ahead!]
Jake begins to lay out his plan to the group. They will use pagers so Kelly’s surveillance stingray can’t intercept their communications. Then Jake and the Nine-Nine will fake kidnap CJ to grab the commissioner’s attention and the Vulture will be the responding detective to the scene so he can eliminate any evidence. With no lead, Kelly will be forced to use his wiretap methods. Meanwhile, Wuntch will plant a bug on the commissioner at city hall so they will know when he accesses the illegal information.
From the jump, Peralta’s scheme goes awry. CJ forgets about the kidnapping and fights back knocking off Jake’s mask. When the Vulture rolls in, he fails to secure any evidence. Not only do the other detectives have Jake’s hair for DNA, they also have a sketch from a witness. When Wuntch moves in to plant the bug, she notices Diaz and Terry tailing her. She has second thoughts because she doesn’t feel trusted.

Back at the rendezvous, Holt apologizes to Wuntch in order to bring her back aboard. The two then attend the Policeman’s Ball to reapply the bug. In order to get close to the commissioner, the arch enemies begin to dance and reminisce about better days before their relationship went sour. When they’re about to bug Kelly, Wuntch reveals she tipped off the commissioner about the plan and double crosses Holt. At the same time, Jake makes a fake hostage video with CJ to ratchet up pressure since they missed their first opportunity. While filming, the Vulture bursts in to arrest everyone for the kidnapping.
The Vulture saw the second plan unraveling and betrays the Nine-Nine like Madeline. Peralta is taken to the interrogation box where Wuntch and Kelly are gloating over their victory over Holt in the observation room. The commissioner even wants to take a picture with his vanquished nemesis and hands Wuntch is phone. This was all part of the plan as Wuntch has free reign over Kelly’s phone. She clones it gaining access to all his information including evidence to his illegal surveillance stingray machine.
For taking down the corrupt Kelly, Wuntch becomes acting commissioner. The gang meet up at Shaw’s to celebrate Terry’s last day. Everyone is sad to see him go but Holt comes in to say their beloved lieutenant isn’t leaving. During the plot against Kelly, Holt revealed to Madeline that he became detective after only a month of being a patrolman. That’s against regulations so Wuntch’s first act as leader of the NYPD is to rectify the situation and demotes Holt to a traffic cop. This creates extra money at the precinct so they’re able to keep Jeffords.
The episode concludes a season long conflict with the big bad, Commissioner Kelly. In true Nine-Nine fashion, the plan hits hiccups but that’s what happens when you trust the likes of the Vulture and CJ. It also highlighted Holt and Wuntch’s complicated relationship that despite all the hostility, there is respect. There were even good times in the past. The show learned a lesson from last year to not end a season in a cliffhanger in case of cancellation. Luckily, we know there will be a season seven and it would be interesting to see how long Holt’s demotion will last if it’s temporary. It’s been fun Nine-Niners and we’ll meet up again next year.
My Favorite Holt/Wuntch Insults:
Holt: And what do you hope to get out of this Madeline? Let me guess. Revenge on Dorothy for killing your sister?

Wuntch: The mission is off. Here’s your bug back. It’s not actually a bug so don’t eat it you lizard.

Holt: How do we get close enough without attracting attention?
Wuntch: We could dance. You must know some moves. You were mentioned by name in the Monster Mash.
