Batgirl #35 Revamps A Classic Bat-Rogue

The Bat-family has a lot of villains. It’s a given, considering that Batman is one of the oldest superheroes on the planet. Given the sheer volume, it was a given that some of them would be clunkers, and the Terrible Trio would be the worst of the worst to many. Batgirl #35 takes advantage of that, revamping the threesome of animal-masked crooks.
Mairghread Scott, Paul Pelletier, Norm Rapmund, Jose Marzan Jr., Jordie Bellaire, and AndWorld Design show us Gotham City’s newest criminal masterminds.
Babs is in the clutches of the Terrible Trio, the owners of the ultimate underground nightclub. She fights her way free of her bonds, but need to make it past the Trio themselves. Meanwhile, her company faces a hostile takeover, and it may lead to both sides of her life coming crashing down.
Scott has a lot of fun revamping the Terrible Trio. The group was previously no more than a threesome of animal themed crooks, and here they are ringleaders in a fascinating criminal enterprise. The two-fold conflict is also a great set-up, as it adds a layer of drama that Bat-books seldom face. It’s a very fun, solid story.
Pelletier, Rapmund and Marzan’s line work is well done. Their action work is reliably good, with engaging layouts, and a fantastic sense of flow across the page. They also know that Babs would handle the action differently than a male character (which some artists forget from time to time), and make her fighting style very different from her fellow heroes. Bellaire’s color art is always reliably great as well, especially in the dark hues she uses with the corporate takeover storyline.
This is a very fun superhero comic, and is absolutely worth checking out if you’re interested in a bit lighter super-story.
