Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge #4 Goes On A Treasure Hunt
by Tony Thornley
Ever since the announcement of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge for Disney theme parks, it’s been clear that the backstory of Black Spire Outpost would be Star Wars canon. This entire miniseries has done the footwork to establish that with multiple connections to existing Star Wars lore. Of all of those connections, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge #4 provides the most interesting so far.
Ethan Sacks, Will Sliney, Dono Sanchez-Almara, and Travis Lanham reveal another chapter in the life of Dok-Ondarr.
As tensions run hot in Black Spire Outpost, Dok-Ondarr reveals another story of his checkered history. For the first time, the Ithorian is on-planet in one of his expeditions, alongside famed treasure hunter/ tomb robber Doctor Aphra. Their target- a Sith temple on the homeworld of the famed Dark Side warriors. Naturally, it’s not an easy task.
Sacks has a lot of fun with this story. He hits the high notes of the stories Aphra has starred in so far, and captures her personality wonderfully. The plot is exciting and fun, with a fast pace and probably the best character beats from Dok-Ondarr himself so far. However, on the downside, there are a few tropes that show up here, specifically with Dok-Ondarr himself and the classic Mary Sue tropes. Specifically, he dispatches a fan-favorite “bad ass” entirely off screen for not much more than a shocking end to the story.
Sliney and Sanchez-Almara’s work still is one of the best parts of the series. Sliney cuts loose in his line work, depicting several creatures and bits of tech that we’ve never seen in the Star Wars universe before. The Sith are an exciting part of the mythos and he takes advantage of their weird tech and mythology and he keeps the focus tight on Aphra. Sanchez-Almara makes it feel alien and fresh, using unnatural colors and warm light tones to convey that on the page.
After this issue I’m a little disappointed to have this trip to Black Spire Outpost come to an end. I can’t wait for the next one though.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge #4 is available now from Marvel Comics.
