CyGames Announces A ‘Shadowverse’ Anime

Recently, CyGames announced that they would be creating an anime based on their digital card game, Shadowverse. It’s rather early days so we don’t know much about the story or even what it will look like, but we have casting info. The director is Keiichiro Kawaguchi, previously known for his work on Phantasy Star Online 2: The Animation and Sket Dance.   The script duties are being handled by Rintarou Isozaki and Deko Akao.  Akao has worked on series like Noragami and My Roommate is a Cat.  The studio for the series is ZEXCS.

They haven’t told us anything about the story, but one thing is pretty obvious.  It won’t have anything to do with the story of the card game.  The main character is holding cards and has some sort of device on his arm, while a monster we’ve never seen in Shadowverse is in the background.  This is actually a bit of a pity, as Shadowverse’s story mode was actually rather entertaining.  It featured seven different people from another world trying to fight against an agent of destruction.  After narrowly defeating the agent who seeks to purify their world, the group wind up traveling from world to world, doing their best to fix problems and keep other worlds from falling apart.

Unfortunately, much like Yu-Gi-Oh, it looks like the useful lore is being sidelined in favor of making what will probably be a pretty popular anime based off a card game.
