Magpie Comes To Gotham City On The Next Batwoman
by Erik Amaya
Now that Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) has accepted her new role as Gotham’s protector, its time for her rogues gallery to develop. Tommy Elliot (Gabriel Mann) may still be dedicated to ending Bruce’s life, but as this preview for next week show reveals, Magpie (Rachel Matthews) will try to join the list of Batwoman’s enemies. Meanwhile, Mary (Nicole Kang) makes a curious discovery and Catherine (Elizabeth Anweis) seemingly comes clean to Jacob (Dougray Scott) about her part in those mysterious events 15 years ago. Will it end their marriage?
Meanwhile, we have to admit last night’s episode was not the young program’s best hour. Riddled with basic storytelling mistakes — that it is to say it told the audience way more than it showed — some contrived plotting for the sake of brevity, and some wild swings in the acting department, we were happy to get to the end. But almost immediately afterward, we recalled early episodes of Arrow, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow featured many of these same mistakes. (The Flash‘s was surprisingly solid in its first eight episodes by contrast). Hopefully, these first season issues will be addressed as Batwoman unfolds and it finds more organic ways to introduce villains and further along running plots. We also hope they find a way to use Kate’s journal more effectively. It’s doing a lot of lifting for Kate and that seems unwise.
Batwoman airs Sundays on The CW.
