Wonder Woman 1984 Director Patty Jenkins Confirms Pedro Pascal As Maxwell Lord

by Erik Amaya

Is it possible Wonder Woman 1984 will feature superhero comics’ other infamous snap?
Director Patty Jenkins took to Twitter Thursday morning to confirm, at long last, the role Pedro Pascal will be playing in the film. That’s character? Justice League International‘s Maxwell Lord.

The character, created by Keith Giffen, J.M DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire, first appeared in 1987’s Justice League #1 as a private businessman interested in funding a new version of League and getting it a proper UN sanction to operate. Part of his plan included Justice League bureaus in nations others than the US. Though initially a conventional human, he gained mind control powers after the Invasion! crossover event.
Always something of an anti-hero, Lord became a full-fledged villain in Countdown to Infinite Crisis; in which he shot former comrade Ted Kord (aka Blue Beetle) in cold blood. Wonder Woman later retaliated by snapping Lord’s neck — but even this was part of the plan as he broadcast his death across the world.
It is, of course, unclear if Pascal’s Lord will follow the same path. It is always possible he will play a morally dubious, but sympathetic ally to Diana (Gal Gadot). Alternatively, he may be funding whatever actions the Cheetah (Kristen Wiig) undertakes through the film. Either way, the character is a welcome addition to the film’s cast and we cannot wait to see if he is friend or foe.
Wonder Woman 1984 hits theaters on June 5th, 2020.
