Review: Rai #1 Dives Into A Whole New Post-Apocalyptic Adventure

by Tony Thornley

Rai has been through more than every other Valiant hero. His status quo has been shaken, he’s led a rebellion, and saved his world. Now he has a new mission and a shiny new series to go with it.

Dan Abnett, Juan Jose Ryp, Andrew Dalhouse and Dave Sharpe launch this new era for Valiant’s future hero.

Rai and Raijin are travelling the country, trying to find the Offspring that will allow Father’s resurrection. The journey isn’t going to be easy. They’ve already cross the Anarcho-Barons, and they won’t be the only threat they will face…

Abnett dives right in with Rai and Raijin’s new mission. He introduces us to their world through action, which also serves a dual purpose to give us an introduction to Raijin. It’s a fun and breezy sci-fi adventure. However, it does have the downside of making too many assumptions about what readers already know. It requires at least a knowledge of Fallen World, if not the Rai stories that proceeded that.

Ryp’s art is fantastic. He packs every page full of detail, creating a fully realized world around the two leads. His action work is equally strong, showing the differences between the leads through differences in how they fight, but also changing up the point of view and layouts as well. It’s one of the best looking issues Valiant has put out and it was a joy to read.

I’m excited to see where this story takes us from here. It’s going to be a blast.

Rai #1 is available now from Valiant Entertainment.
