Marvel March 2020 Solicitations: Top Picks For Your Consideration

by Tony Thornley

Welcome back! With the holidays and everything that comes with the end of the year , March 2020 solicitations from Marvel Comics might have gotten lost in the shuffle. So we’re here to cover a few highlights and hopefully point out something new for you to try out!

New launches

Strange Academy #1 Cover by Humberto Ramos & Edgar Delgado

The Marvel Universe continues to see several high profile new launches in the first quarter. Strange Academy #1 from Skottie Young & Humberto Ramos take magical kids to school in a concept that I’m surprised hasn’t popped up yet. Spider-Woman #1 puts Jessica Drew in a new costume and back into the espionage world from Karla Pacheco & Pere Perez. One of Into The Spider-Verse’s breakout stars returns from the dead in Spider-Man Noir #1 by Margaret Stohl & Juan Ferreyra.

Two of the most popular Marvel lines also keep getting bigger. The X-Men add Hellions by Zeb Wells & Stephen Segovia, and Cable #1 reuniting Gerry Duggan & Phil Noto. Meanwhile in a galaxy far, far away, Star Wars: Bounty Hunters #1 launches the first ever ongoing series starring some of the Star Wars universe’s most popular characters from Ethan Sacks & Paolo Villanelli!

The Marvel Universe comes to Krakoa

Mauraders #9 Cover by Russell Dauterman & Matthew Wilson

Ever since the Dawn of X launched, readers have been waiting for the Marvel Universe to come to Krakoa. X-Men/Fantastic Four continues this month promising some big things for both franchises. The next big Marvel Universe guest stars are pretty unexpected though.

The newly formed Excalibur continues to face the wild hunt in Excalibur #8 & 9 but find themselves opposed by an interesting foe. Series writer Tini Howard has confirmed that the handsome young man on the cover is none other than Cullen Bloodstone- kid brother of Elsa and last seen years ago in Avengers Undercover. Meanwhile in Mauraders #9 Captain Kate’s crew has their hands full when Yellowjacket invades Krakoa!

Marvels

Marvel #1 cover by Alex Ross

If you though the celebration of the seminal Marvels was over in 2019, you’d be sorely mistaken. In March, we get not one but three new projects inspired by the classic series. In Marvel #1, Alex Ross curates new tales inspired by Marvels from creators like Frank Espinosa, Steve Rude, Kurt Busiek, and Alex and Steve Darnall. Meanwhile, we get two one-shots called Marvels Snapshot– the first, a post-World War II Sub-Mariner story by Alan Brennert, Kurt Busiek & Jerry Ordway and the second, a story of Human Torch’s college days by Evan Dorkin, Sarah Dyer, Kurt Busiek & Benjamin Dewey!

Hulk #750

Immortal Hulk #3 cover by Joe Bennett, Ruy Jose, Paul Mounts

No, the Immortal Hulk isn’t getting renumbered but Al Ewing & Joe Bennett ARE celebrating 750 of The Hulk with a massive sized anniversary issue. As has often happened in their run, something is going wrong. Horribly, horribly wrong. It wouldn’t be Immortal Hulk without it.

Black Cat’s big month!

Conan: Battle For The Serpent Crown #2 Cover by Mahmud Asrar

Felicia Hardy had a huge 2019, with her appearance in Amazing Spider-Man: Hunted serving as springboard for one of the best received new series debuts of the year. Her good luck continues in March as she makes a Wolverine-level number of appearances across the Marvel Universe. She and Spidey guest star in Ant-Man. She faces the Cimmerian Barbarian in Conan: Battle For the Serpent Crown. Her alternate reality counterpart resurfaces in Spider-Man Noir and that’s all on top of the Gamerverse series Spider-Man: The Black Cat Strikes and her own series (ironically guest starring Wolverine)!
