Nocturna’s ‘Batwoman’ Debut May Suggest More Monsters Are On The Way

So far, The CW’s Batwoman has hewed fairly close to the “naturalistic” stories of Arrow‘s early seasons. Outside of Kate’s (Ruby Rose) entanglement with the Crisis, her opponents have been fully human — like Alice (Rachel Skarsten) and Hush (xx). But it seems the supernatural will finally be invading the program.
EW reports Vampire Diaries vet Kayla Ewell has been cast as Nocturna, a somewhat obscure 1980s DC Comic character who catapulted to prominence in a 2014 Batwoman storyline in which she became romantically involved with Kate, but was manipulating her into the relationship to some extent via her vampire powers.
Beyond those issues of that story, Nocturna also speaks to Kate’s supernatural leanings in DC Comics. Since her first major story in 52, Kate has tangled with monsters, cultists, and other things more befitting a Hammer horror production than the typical Gotham vigilante faces on any given night. Since Batwoman was first announced, the comic’s supernatural leanings have been downplayed as the television series seemed to be positioned as Arrow‘s “normal people who can fight” replacement. But Nocturna’s appearance could speak to a stranger future for Kate and her team.
According to the site, Nocturna’s appearance on the show will see her as an “alluring and seductive villain” who “preys on the beautiful people of Gotham to sustain her need for human blood caused by a rare disease.” And while that “rare” disease may give the series a more Arrow-esque way out of things like vampires, it could also be obscuring the truth: the monsters are headed for fair Gotham.
