Reviewing ‘Conan: Battle For The Serpent Crown’ #2 Offering More Than Just A Heist

Conan’s life has gotten incredibly complicated since he’s been catapulted into the modern Marvel Universe. However, when Mephisto enters the picture in Conan: Battle for the Serpent Crown #2 it gets even worse.
Saladin Ahmed, Luke Ross, Nolan Woodard, and Travis Lanham put Conan on a collision course with the entire Marvel Universe.
The Black Cat has the ring that Conan and his new companion Nyla were after. Naturally they need to chase her down, even with mob thugs, the Scarlet Spider, and modern super-science making it worse. However, is the mighty Conan just a pawn in an infernal scheme?
Ahmed is determined not just to hit as much of the Marvel Universe as possible, but to make it fun too. The story bounces through plot points in a chaotic and frantic chase through Las Vegas, but it never gets overly complicated or contrived. It’s silly fun but it’s well written, and thoroughly enjoyable.
Ross does a great job with the art. His layouts are fairly straightforward but he keeps the action moving and engaging. He plays with point of view, and using the action to create sight lines that captures the cinematic feel of Ahmed’s script. Ross is a skilled veteran, and this issue is proof.
Conan is bouncing through the entire Marvel Universe, and things are about to get much worse for him. It’s a fun adventure that I’m excited to see where it goes next.
