The Infinity Stones Return To The Marvel Universe In Infinite Destinies
by James Ferguson
No one can argue the power and influence the Infinity Stones have on the Marvel Universe. These all powerful items are a convenient McGuffin for our heroes, whether they’re earthbound or flying through the stars. This summer, the chase continues with Infinite Destinies, a storyline running through a series of eight annuals pairing classic heroes like Captain America and Iron Man with some of the newcomers like Star and Amulet in the search for the Infinity Stones.
Editor Nick Lowe says:
We’ve had a wave of incredible new characters over the last few years, and Infinite Destinies will shine a light on eight of them. We’ll discover new aspects of these heroes and villains in adventures with our the most archetypal Marvel heroes.
Infinite Destinies begins in Iron Man Annual #1 from writer Jed MacKay and artist Ibraim Roberson. The Iron Avengers learns of a strange people who kidnapped and tortured Miles Morales. While he’s looking into it, he learns some shocking information about the Assessor and Quantum.
Writer Jed MacKay says:
The Infinity Stones have found new homes — as people! Infinite Destinies is the next chapter in the story of the Infinity Stones and the people they’ve bonded with — and the powers in the Marvel Universe who are taking interest in these powerful new players.
This is quickly followed by Captain America Annual #1 from writer Gerry Duggan and artist Marco Castiello. The focus is turned to the fugitive known as Overtime after he breaks out of death row when the Time Stone bonded with his soul. He was gifted with powers he barely understands, but now Captain America is here to tell him his time is up.
Each annual will also include a chapter of “Super-Spy vs. Super-Spy,” a story following Nick Fury as the Agent of Nothing and Phil Coulson as the Agent of Mephisto. These two brothers-in-arms will face off and reunited for the first time since Coulson’s death.
I’m glad to see this play out as I was curious as to when we would see this loose plot thread tied up. The Infinity Stones inhabiting people was established at the end of Infinity Wars awhile back so I’m glad to see this picked up and run with. I wonder if this spins out of Empyre.
Infinite Destinies begins in June 2020.
