Kickstarting Comics: Stomped #1 Brings New Kaiju Action To Comics

by Tony Thornley

In the last decade, kaiju have shoved their way into prominence in worldwide pop culture. For good reason too, as the giant monsters are impossible to miss, and that’s exactly what the team behind Stomped seeks to capture in their Kickstarter.

Created by Ross Radke, Stomped is the first of four anthology style issues set within the same universe – one plagued by violent kaiju who keep the human population of Earth cowering in fear. This series is the introduction to a larger universe of stories from Radke. Each issue of the miniseries will feature two stories full of kaiju action.

This Kickstarter is for the first issue, which features ‘Hybrid Theory’, a story of mad science gone wrong by Radke and artist Andre Diaz, and ‘Blind Date’ written and drawn by Radke. The series also features lettering by Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou.

I got a glimpse of the unlettered first issue. It’s a fun take on the giant monster genre, with expressive, cartoony artwork and a fantastic design sense. Radke and Diaz’s story had some great horror moments, as well as some well done emotional beats. Radke’s story is a brisk superhero action tale with some wonderful humor to accompany the thrills.

The Kickstarter for issue #1 has already reached its goal, but every dollar it makes over the goal will go towards the future issues, and even more. As an added plus this is one of the most affordable Kickstarters I’ve ever seen, with rewards kicking in at just a dollar, and some really great rewards still available for higher dollar amounts. So, if you like what you see, throw in a few dollars and get 32 pages of Kaiju action.

You can find Stomped #1 on Kickstarter now, with the campaign ending April 10, 2020.
