Sony Chooses A Name For Its Spider-Man Universe
by Erik Amaya
The Spider-Verse has a new name.
According to IGN, Sony has announced the nomenclature it would prefer when discussing its line of Spider-Man-derived Marvel films: the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters. The line comprises the characters seen in spin-offs like Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, as well as Sony previous Spider-Man film cycles and forthcoming features like Morbius, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Madame Webb.
We’ll be honest, the name is unwieldy; lacking an easy acronym like Marvel Studios’s MCU or even the unofficial DCEU. But it also smacks of the corporateese which often emanates from Sony’s efforts. That said, we imagine this was chosen with the best of intentions — pointing out it is Sony’s library of Marvel characters — but we doubt it will be adopted when “Spidey-Verse” gets the idea across with fewer words.
Branding is important, especially when Sony and Marvel cease to be allies after the Peter Parker’s final MCU appearance sometime in the mid-2020s. We just hope Sony sees it always had a name better suited to t-shirts all along.
