Jordan Peele and J.J Abrams Bring ‘Lovecraft Country’ To HBO
by Tito W. James
Based on the 2016 novel by Matt Ruff, Lovecraft Country follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he searches for his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams) in 1950s Jim Crow America. This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying Lovecraftian monsters.
The series is executive produced by J.J Abrams and Jordan Peele. This isn’t HBO’s first time delving into eldritch mythos. The first season of True Detective left many viewers wanting more supernatural elements. It appears that Lovecraft Country will deliver the monster scares in spades but appears to lack the “uncanny” sense of subtle horror that made Lovecraft’s writing popular in the first place.
Lovecraft Country airs this August on HBO
