Will Deke Take The Shot Glimpsed In This ‘Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Promo?

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s visit to the 1930s has begun swimmingly. They’ve discovered part of the mission requires the survival of Hydra into the 21st Century. But not everyone on the team is convinced preserving Hydra is worth the trouble it will eventually cause. And as this preview for next week’s episode reveals, a key part of “the thread” is Billy Malick (Darren Barnet), the father of Hydra big-wig Gideon Malick (Powers Boothe) — the man who caused the team so much suffering a few years back. Will Deke (Jeff Ward) be swayed by Daisy (Chloe Bennet) and murder the young (and so far blameless) Malick ancestor?

These sorts of questions underscore the confidence S.H.I.E.L.D. has had in its final years. Taking a trip through time to prevent the destruction of the Triskelion seen in the promo offers the series a bevy of ethical dilemmas and potential do-overs that, quite honestly, we cannot wait to see. Will Daisy try to save her parents and build a better world for the Inhumans? Will the Coulson LMD (Clark Gregg) inadvertently prevent Coulson’s original death during the Battle of New York? And will their run-in with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) resolve the cliffhanger from Agent Carter?
And while we’re asking questions, Deke’s philosophy toward time travel — and his presentation of the two theories — offers an opportunity for the show to integrate once again with the MCU or establish itself as timeline created by that attempt to save Coulson so long ago. Will it take the shot and make it all connect again? Either way, we look forward to seeing how it sticks the landing. While it had a rough start, S.H.I.E.L.D. became one of our favorite broadcast comic book shows and we hope its true ending will shine in 12 weeks’ time.
