HBO Max Offers A First Glimpse At The Snyder Cut

by Erik Amaya

HBO Max is banking on the Snyder Cut of Justice League. So much so, in fact, it seems it will be an integral part of their marking beginning today. The streaming service unleashed a first glimpse of director Zack Snyder‘s version of the film by actually reminding you of Lex Luthor’s (Jesse Eisenberg) final lines in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. And while the clip relies heavily on the ringing of the bell, it also shows Diana (Gal Gadot) finding a fresco depicting the Tiger Force at the Core of All Things, Darkseid.

Presumably, the fight against his forces in the distant past as depicted in the theatrical cut saw the Alpha Predator coming to Earth — which is pretty consistent with his DC Comics lore. What this means for the team is anyone’s guess as the original plan for Justice League was a two-part story in which Darkseid’s uncle Steppenwolf cleared the way for the Lord of Apokalips’s triumphant return. And if that sounds suspiciously like the plot of Masters of the Universe, that’s because the director of that film pilfered ideas from the Fourth World.
The new version of Justice League will restore much of the tone and plot the director intended for his film before a family tragedy pulled him away from the film and Joss Whedon took over planned reshoots to insert more comedy and massage over the places where Darkseid was meant to tread. It remains to be seen if the film will be any better for being restored, but it will prove to be of anthropological interest no matter what.
The Snyder Cut comes to HBO Max next year.
