‘The Other History Of The DC Universe’ Finally Set For A November Release

While DC Comics may be going through a historic change in its own Burbank offices, The Other History of the DC Universe is finally set to launch this November.
The long awaited project from writer John Ridley (Twelve Years a Slave), artists Giuseppe “Cammo” Camuncoli, Andrea Cucchi, and colorist José Villarrubia, revisits key moments in the history of DC’s various continuities from the perspective of Black Lightning Jefferson Pierce and his daughter Anissa; Herald Mal Duncan and Bumblebee Karen Beecher; Renee Montoya; and Tatsu Yamashiro, aka Katana. The book seeks the reframe important moments in the comic book universe’s history from the viewpoint of underrepresented groups.
“Considering the events of the last few months, I don’t think there has been a more urgent need to see the world through a variety of lenses and perspectives,” Ridley said in a statement. “I am deeply appreciative of DC, Cammo, and Andrea, and to all the artisans who have literally put years of work into these stories. I am so enthusiastic for the opportunity to share this series with both the longtime fans of the DCU and a new generation of readers who I hope will feel invited and encouraged to join in.”
Camuncoli (with Marco Mastrazzo) and Jamal Campbell will provide covers for the five-issue, bimonthly series.
In the works for sometime, the project will seemingly be the swan song of DC Black Label executive editor Mark Doyle, who was reportedly let go from the company in the midst of a massive round of layoffs across the WarnerMedia empire on Monday. Offering a statement about The Other History, Doyle said, “Comic books have a proud history of being a reflection of the world around them, and it only makes sense that includes the viewpoints and perspectives that show the diversity of the superhero experience. I think fans will be very pleased come November.”
The Other History of the DC Universe is not Ridley’s first comic book work, he is the co-creator of The American Way and has written The Authority, nor is it his only long-in-the-works, comics-related project. The screenwriter was also developing a Marvel TV project for ABC, but it is unclear if that is still happening with Marvel’s television efforts becoming the purview of Marvel Studios.
The Other History of the DC Universe is set to debut in comic shops and digital on November 24th.
