‘Batman ’89’ And ‘Superman ’78’ : DC Comics Bring Their Most Famous Films To Comics With All-New Stories
by Olly MacNamee
DC Comics have announced two new Digital First titles based on film adaptions beloved by fans across the globe. There’s Superman ’78 – based on Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie – and Batman ’89 set in the film universe as imagined by Tim Burton.
Writer Rob Venditti and artist Wilfredo Torres will capture imaginations in Superman ’78 while Batman screenwriter Sam Hamm and artist Joe Quinones will immerse readers into Batman ’89.
We are promised the return of Catwoman in Batman ‘89 as well as Harvey Dent/Two-Face too. But, will he be the true Harvey Dent of Burton’s film as played by Billy Dee Williams, or the imposter from the Schumacher helmed third film? After all, times have changed and whitewashing of this nature surely can’t be a good thing in this day and age? It wasn’t then, either, I hasten to add.
Well, we only have until July 27th to find out when both debut chapters make their way onto DC Universe Unlimited. DC Digital First will make the firs six chapters if each title available on that day followed by new chapters of each comic book for the six weeks that immediately follow.
The twelve chapters of each new series will also publish as six printed comics between August and October and as hardcover collections in October (Batman ’89) and November (Superman ’78).
