“Hey, It Took Me Weeks To Find That Couch” — Let’s Talk About ‘Wynonna Earp’ Season 4, Episode 7

We’re … not ready for a world without Wynonna Earp.

Admittedly, there are still five episodes remaining in its run, but just the knowledge that a long-term ending for the series is so soon is, well, emotional. Thankfully, this week’s episode eschews most of the raw emotions left over from the mid-season hiatus to poke fun at love itself.

If this were a video review, this is where Haddaway’s “What Is Love?” would start playing.

To recap: it’s been a month or so since Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) and Waverley (Dominque Provost-Chalkely) killed two of the Clantons. Or long enough for the snow to thaw around the homestead. The feud between Wynonna and Doc (Tim Rozon) continues, and Nicole (Kat Barrell) spent most of the time looking for the couch that used to be in the sheriff’s station so she could propose to Waverly again.

Coming into the episode, it’s the night before an engagement party Nedley (Greg Lawson) plans to through for Waverly and Nicole at Shorty’s; having now taken over the establishment from his daughter. But when Wynonna stumbles into the bar after she drunkenly threatened Amon (Noam Jenkins) with Peacemaker, it leads to a Sunday afternoon bachelorette party where Waves meets a stripper named Dimitri (Christopher Jacot). From the scars on his back, he’s clearly not human. Nevertheless, Waverly falls into his trap as he passes on to her a love-granting kajigger. One bit of love-glitter and the person exposed to it will fall madly for the next person they see.

And, as Dimitri later explains, the desire for sex only enters the conversation if that’s what what the person exposed truly wants. Consent still matters, even among Cupids.

In a switcheroo mix-up worthy of Three’s Company, Nicole recommits to Waves in an extremely physical way, noted bigot Bunny Loblaw (Jann Arden) also falls for Waverly; although it is slightly more chaste. Wynonna finds she wants to ride to Amon — or is it the other way around? — and Doc ends up giving Chloe (Savannah Basley) a pep talk while momentarily infatuated with her. Oh, and Nedly ends up smitten with Bunny for some reason.

Considering the explanation Dimitri gives Waverly later about the spell respecting consent, everyone’s reactions are interesting. Let’s start with Bunny. While she commits to Waverly with her usual enthusiasm, its clear she’s not entirely clear on what it all means. It suggests she is looking to be more emotionally vulnerable than, say, physically ready for the deed. Her far more sexual by-play with Amon at Shorty’s later indicates she is overwhelmingly straight. Which may work out for Nedley, who was apparently attracted to her in his youth. Or maybe he’s just a lonely older man who sees something he never noticed before.

Doc’s infatuation with Chloe seems to end before he even makes it to Shorty’s, which implies the pep talk comes from a different place than romance. Considering Doc’s conflicted feelings prior to this episode, maybe he regrets what happened when he and Wyatt rode out after the Clantons all those years ago? Or, perhaps, it reflects that is heart still belongs to Wynonna, a fact later confirmed when she glitterbombs everyone except Waverly and Dimitri with the kajigger. The effect creates a mutual appreciation society among the others and, for a moment, a return of the special thing Doc and Wynonna share.

And, like Wynonna, we don’t want to let go of it either.

Most ambiguous, though, is Amon becoming smitten with Waverly. Maybe, like Wynonna suggests throughout the episode with a tinge of jealously, everyone just loves Waves. Or maybe its part of that angel thing. Either way, it means he’ll be part of the endgame, by gum. Or by Wynonna, as the case may be. Did we ever figure out the way she want the ride with him to go?

Also, his professed attraction to Doc prior to the love spell makes absolute sense.

Considering Nicole’s response to the kajigger before and after the glitterbomb suggests a level of repression we’d not noticed before. As Waverly points out before any of the glitter, Nicole is quite demur with the PDA — the couch at the beginning of the episode not withstanding — but like her worries about the wedding, there’s a level of public affection she’s seemingly uncomfortable with. See also: her sublimated attraction to Wynonna.

But all of this happened because Amon and Dimitri had a bad break-up a while back and the ex-Cupid was down on love. One could even say he was jealous of Waverly’s love for Nicole. And while the whole thing was just a farce, it’s interesting to see all the way the characters behaved this week could spill out into the remaining episodes. Wynnona’s expressed jealousy toward Waverly, for example, is likely an outward expression of her own pain. Or, who knows, maybe she’s always been a little jealous of they way people stand by her sister? And while we doubt anything will ever break #WayHaught — even Nicole’s dismissal of the hashtag — her hidden appetites could be a source of difficulty in the future. Well, maybe not in the time remaining we have with the couple, but still …

Meanwhile, danger abounds. Amon is not happy about Wynonna’s return to demon hunting. Chloe decided to pick up the family business in the end and Billy is free to roam again. With only five episodes remaining, we know all accounts will be settled. We just hope it ends with a medium-fussy wedding instead of bloodshed.
