‘The Mandalorian,’ ‘Lovecraft Country,’ ‘The Boys,’ & ‘WandaVision’ Receive Major Emmy Nominations

by Erik Amaya

Genre is once again big at the Emmys.

The Television Academy announced the nominations for its 73rd Primetime Awards Tuesday with The Mandalorian, Lovecraft Country, The Boys, Cobra Kai, and WandaVision all getting nominated in key categories: the first three in Best Drama, with the other two taking spots in the Best Comedy and Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, respectively. Additionally, WandaVision stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany were nominated in the Lead Actor in an Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series categories as well. Kathryn Hahn also nabbed a nod in the Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series category. Lovecraft Country‘s Jurnee Smollett and Jonathan Majors also received nominations in the Lead Actor Drama categories.

Beyond that, the shows also took home a bevy of nominations in writing and technical categories.

While the shift to a more even field for genre television and more traditional fare like The Crown and Black-ish has been brewing for awhile, it is interesting to finally see multiple shows get recognition across the three of the four formats recognized by the Academy — and that’s only because no one is making high-end genre TV movies. Of course, the wider acceptance comes from the larger amount of prestige genre shows available, which still leaves hard-working genre shows on broadcast channels with little-to-no recognition. That’s a trend we doubt will change as broadcast television continues to be sidelined outside of Saturday Night Live, Late Night chat shows, This is Us, and Black-ish.

Here’s the complete list of nominations in the major categories (via Deadline):
