Victoria Cartagena To Reprise ‘Gotham’ Role On ‘Batwoman’
by Erik Amaya
Remember when Renee Montoya (Victoria Cartagena) and Crispus Allen (Andrew Stewart-Jones) were recurring characters on Gotham? The producers of Batwoman clearly do as Cartagena will join the cast in Season 3 as Earth-Prime’s version of the character. According to Deadline, this Montoya is a “former GCPD officer who left the force when she could no longer stomach the corruption inside the department. She now runs the ‘freaks division,’ which hasn’t seen a lot of action… until now.”
We’re not entirely sure what the “freaks division” is or how it relates to the GCPD if she quit the force, but this Montoya has a very personal reason to clean up Gotham’s streets. And as we’re always looking for The Question to arrive in the Arrowverse, we have to wonder if Montoya will finally answer our query on the matter.
The character, created by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Mitch Brian, first debuted on Batman: The Animated Series as a GCPD beat cop. She soon migrated to the DC Universe and became a detective, eventually joining the Major Case squad and partnering up with Crispus Allen. During the upheaval of Infinite Crisis, both left the force and assumed new costumed identities. As The Question, Montoya starred in her own back-up series in the pages of Detective Comics while it hosted Batwoman. Both characters were written by Greg Rucka at the time — another reason to think Montoya may also use her masked persona on the television series. Also, it’s nice to see the show honoring some DC history by bringing back an actor already familiar with the role.
Batwoman returns October 13th on The CW.
